Friends of the bride hosted a luncheon at Gretchen's at the Sun Valley Lodge; it was bad timing that this outdoor luncheon on the terrace coincided with one of the hottest days of the week (104 degrees). We were shaded, but we - along with the butter on the tables - were melting. It's a beautiful setting with nicely set tables overlooking the year-round ice skating rink. Gretchen's roped off an area for our lunch which was nice to have a few tables close together so we could chat and mingle. The lunch was a buffet, and the buffet items were all so tempting. I'm sure my parents would be ashamed, but I didn't even make it to the carving station. There were hot food items from roasted chicken to salmon to red meat on the carving station to roasted potatoes and wild rice, and there were also lots of other great cold items like fresh fruit and grilled vegetables. The waitress asked us if we wanted glasses of champagne which we all ordered, but they never arrived. Boo.

We stayed at the lodge and were looking forward to eating at Gretchen's because of the trout. The menu offered reasonable prices and a good selection of both meat, fowl and fish. We both ordered caesar salad and the trout. The romaine lettuce was brown. We sent it back and did get a better dish. The trout was overcooked and so was the spinach and broccolli - rather mushy. The undeterminable brown sauce under the fish was rather salty and almost jellied ? We ordered Elk Cove 2008 Pinot Noir which went well with the fish. Actually the bread, butter and wine were the high point of dinner. The service was good though.

Terrible service and mistakes were made with our orders repeatedly. Food was worse than mediocre. We won't go again and we are staying in the Lodge! The walk into Ketchum is the only way to go for food.

I am with a ski group and we've eaten 4 breakfast's and have never been disappointed. Our waiter "T" is first class and has the best people skills I've ever encountered. there are 5 of us and all our meals have been prepared how we like them and have been delivered in a very timely manner. Coffee cups kept full. They have preserves that come with the toast that is delicious. It's the service that takes this review to a BIG FIVE for us.

Lunch menu is not fancy, but most will find something they like. Outside terrace to enjoy the weather and watch ice skating is the only draw.

Pretty good eatery in the main lodge at the Sun Valley resort. It serves all types of food and the patio in the evening is a great place to enjoy Sun Valley. The meal took a little longer to prepare than I thought it should be all and all this is a good place to eat.

Waffles were great. I'm so into waffles because of this place. Bacon was great! But it all took way to long to come out.

Gretchens has gotten a facelift and update since we were here a year ago and the reactions are all over the place. Some people who have been coming to Sun Valley for years don't like it and want to remember it the way it was. Not me! I'm definitely a fan of the changes that have taken place here! The restaurant is brighter, more open, and has a fresh look. The food was excellent! My husband had sausage which is made on the premises. I tasted it and it was delicious. I opted for a chicken entrée and that was cooked very well. The food and beverage manager checked on us and asked for feedback. So there is definitely good managerial oversight here. We were impressed with the new look at Gretchens and at the Lodge in general.

I understand that the have just re-opened last week so this review is based only on food. The staff was very kind but also stressed. I ordered macaroni and cheese and my grandma ordered a burger. Let's start with the burger. Although the meat was cooked perfect it came out cold missing tomatoes and cheese. The chips were hard as a rock and you could just tell the food wasn't fresh. All in all she said if we ever went back she would try it again since the meat was very good and cooked exactly how she asked. My macaroni and cheese came out cold. Not even Luke warm, cold. My server was very nice and immediately took it back to get me hot macaroni. When it returned it was indeed warm but completely lacking flavor. I would not order the macaroni again.

Stunning setting, food was pretty good, service was below par, but I think we were just unlucky. Don't bother with the coffee, it's terrible.

Awesome spot for breakfast! I had the egg white, kale something and loved it! Service was friendly and continued at a nice and I un-rushed pace.

The food was decent, and the outdoor patio was great, but the service was terrible. The waiters and waitresses were not bad, but the management is what led to the poor service. With a mostly empty restaurant, the majorly understaffed restaurant had it's poor servers physically running back and forth from the kitchen, just to keep up. Not kidding, the lady from behind the front desk of the hotel was coming around refilling water at one point because they were so short on staff. When we ordered drinks, the waiter had to come and apologize to us for the drinks taking so long to arrive, as it was due to the bartender being "MIA". I had never seen anything like it before. The worst part was the older gentlemen who was the host. Not only did he do nothing to help the overworked staff, but it actually seemed like he was making more stress for them. On several occasions we heard him yell at the wait staff for doing something wrong, across the entire restaurant. It was very unprofessional, and only made things worse. We will not be coming back, or recommending it to others.

My husband and I arrived the first day the Sun Valley Lodge reopened after their remodel. We had a drink in the bar and then moved to Gretchen's Restaurant for dinner and that's where the story begins. We each ordered a soup and then a filet mignon to split. No problem. The bread was out of this world! We finished the soup and waited for the main course. ...and waited and waited and waited. Our waiter kept stopping by the table to reassure us, but obviously something had gone really wrong in the kitchen. Then the waiter brings us each an entree of New York strip. Not what we ordered but still delicious. He tells us this is just an appetizer because they were so slow (we suspected the kitchen messed up the order and grilled us a New York versus the filet). At that point we were happy with the New York and told them to forget the filet but no, they boxed up the filet for us with all the sides, gave us a free strawberry/rhubarb cheesecake for dessert and, with huge apologies, sent us our on way. Totally a class act! Incredible wait staff and a beautiful venue. We will go again and again.

We were in town for a conference and had "3 out of 4 day" ski tickets. One of the days was too crappy to ski, but we discovered that we could trade in one of the days for a variety of things, including lunch at Gretchen's and ice skating. Totally worth it, because the food here is great! I got the Medetarian sandwich for lunch, and it was solid. Big, gooey with cheese and it included a side of sweet potato fries (they were solid as well). Others around the table raved about the French onion soup, and I got my hands on a few onion rings... excellent. Prices were reasonable (especially since our lunch was free), but the coupon didn't include booze, and their house wine (supposed to be the cheap one, right?) was $11 for a glass. Coulda ordered 2 1/2 beers for that, but not a huge deal. Overall, this was a great place to grab lunch. Classy, cozy and great food!

Stayed at the Sun Valley Lodge and stopped in at Gretchen's for breakfast. Ordered the Bagels and lox and what they brought out was a HUGE serving of smoked salmon, a bagel, and some cream cheese. I don't think I could even buy that much smoked salmon at the store for the same price. Awesome breakfast.
